IMMACULATE CONCEPTION & ST EGWIN

The Catholic mission at Evesham was first established by the Passionist community from Broadway in 1887 when they built an iron mission church in Evesham. Ten years later, Evesham came under the auspices of the Archdiocese of Birmingham, which moved the mission church on the High Street to the site of the present church.

In 1900/01 a red-brick school was added (now our Parish Centre) and the presbytery in 1903. A permanent church was commissioned under the famous architectural talents of Pugin and Pugin. The church was designed by Sebastian Pugin Powell (1866 - 1949), grandson of A W N Pugin.

The foundation stone of the new church was laid in September 1911 and St Egwin, one of the Church's patron saints, was a Bishop at the time and founded the Benedictine Abbey in Evesham which was opened on 27th November 1912.

The majority of the cost of the church was funded by the rector, Monsignor R J Patten. A sacristy was added soon after the church was completed. The church is other wise little altered. Historic photographs show that only an earlier rood beam over the altar was replaced and stained glass was added to the side chapels and the sanctuary in the 1920s & 30s.

After over 100 years, in 2021, thanks to the Lottery Heritage Fund, the church underwent extensive renovations to restore it to its original glory as it was all those years ago.

MOST HOLY SAVIOUR

Having established the parish in 1826 as one of the earliest Post-Reformation Catholic Missions, the Benedictines handed responsibility for its pastoral care to the Passionists in 1850. The story of this church weaves together the lives of two religious congregations: Benedictine and Passionist Brothers, Priests and novices finding in Broadway a special place in their journies to explore God's love shown in the Death and Resurrection of Jesus.

At St Saviour many devout young men found confirmations of their vocation to Preisthood and Religious Life with the Passionists.

The Passionist Mission lasted 150 years at Broadway until 2000 where, in its Great Jubilee Year, the Passionists relinquished the parish to the Archdiocese of Birmingham.

The mark the Passionists left on the church and the wider village of Broadway can still be seen today and the church interior is still the same now as it was when the Passionists were here. Many Passionists are also buried in Most Holy Saviour's Churchyard.

A history of the church, written by Sister Dominic Savio (Hamer) CP in 2000 to mark the Passionist's departure, can be seen by clicking the button below. Here you can also see archive photos of the church.
